Study Procedures
How long is the study?
The study lasts 7 months. Intervention arm receives 4 months of coaching +
3 months follow-up. All participants complete surveys at baseline, 4 months, and 7 months.
What is randomization and what does it mean for me?
Randomization assigns you by chance (like flipping a coin) to either the control or
intervention arm. This ensures scientific validity and fairness.
What surveys will I need to complete?
You will complete surveys assessing burnout, fulfillment, resilience, quality of life,
and other well-being factors. Each takes ~10 minutes.
Will I need to do an interview?
Yes, at 7 months all participants complete a 30-minute qualitative interview by secure video.
Coaching Program
What happens if I’m assigned to the intervention arm?
You will receive monthly 1:1 coaching + monthly group coaching for 4 months via video.
Who are the coaches?
Novice coaches are physician mothers trained in coaching. Certified coaches are members
of the MGH coaching program with extensive expertise.
What if my schedule conflicts with group sessions?
You may attend another group’s session or use asynchronous video + self-guided content.
Will I get protected time for coaching?
No. Intervention participants have the same clinical workload as control participants.
What topics are covered in coaching?
Topics include Wheel of Life, Strengths, Gratitude, Gas Tank, Holding Two Truths,
Career Arc, Decluttering, Barriers & Assumptions, Silencing Inner Critic.
Control Arm
What happens if I’m assigned to the control arm?
You continue routine residency support + complete the same surveys + receive a $100
Tango gift card + end-of-study coaching workshop.
Will control participants receive any coaching?
Yes — a 2-hour workshop, all coaching videos, and self-guided exercises at study completion.
Confidentiality & Privacy
Is my participation confidential?
Yes. All data are de-identified and stored securely. Your program director will not know.
Will my program director know if I participate?
No. Only study staff have access to the participant ID linkage file.
Will participation affect my residency evaluation?
No. Surveys are not shared with your residency or used for evaluation.
Are coaching sessions recorded?
No. Only the optional end-of-study interview may be recorded (with permission).
Benefits & Compensation
